Failed back or neck surgery is a common enough occurrence that it has become the subject of numerous studies in the medical community. So common that it has been given a medical label, the Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (also called FBSS, or failed back syndrome). FBSS is also sometimes used to describe failed neck surgery (also called failed neck surgery syndrome).

It is interesting to note that there is no equivalent term for in any other type of surgery (e.g. there is no failed cardiac surgery syndrome, failed hip surgery syndrome, etc.).

For some patients surgery is ultimately necessary. However, because of the associated complications and low success rate, it should only be considered when all other options have been exhausted.
